Scarborough

THE TOWN
Scarborough is located in southern Maine, approximately 7 miles south of the City of Portland. It is just a short drive to Portland and the Maine Mall with easy access to the Maine Turnpike, Portland Jetport and passenger rail service to Boston.

Besides many fine places to walk and explore, recreational amenities include golf, tennis, bowling, kayaking, short track speedway and indoor carting. Scarborough offers lovely sandy beaches and the rocky coastline made famous by a local artist, Winslow Homer, the internationally renowned artist. Homer painted many of his best known works on Prouts Neck. Maine's first governor, William King was born in Scarborough.

The largest saltwater marsh in Maine is located within Scarborough boundaries along with Rachel Carson Wildlife lands. The salt marsh is crossed by meandering tidal rivers and streams and is a habitat for a broad array of wildlife and birds. The marsh estuary opens to a coastline flanked by miles of sandy beaches from Pine Point to the South, Ferry Beach, Prouts Neck, Scarborough Beach and the quiet coastal community of Higgins Beach to the North.

Scarborough is a suburban community that offers open spaces, parks and recreational areas for its residents and visitors. Scarborough has a balance with its commercial businesses. The newest area for businesses to locate in Scarborough is along the Haigis Parkway, located right at Exit 6 of the Maine Turnpike.

THE SCHOOLS
The Scarborough schools system provides services from kindergarten to adult education practicing its philosophy of "...offering a quality education for all eligible members of the community..." Students learn in a positive atmosphere where educators strive to meet individual student needs throughout the school calendar year and beyond.

The schools are housed in modern facilities with K-12 access to technology and information resources provided at the point of learning. The schools consist of three primary (K-2) schools, one intermediate (3-5) school, one middle (6-8) school, and one high (9-12) school. The system offers parental choice of a grade level or multiage program from kindergarten through middle school, and benefits from extensive parent involvement and volunteers.

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY:
The Scarborough School System is dedicated to offering quality education for all eligible members of the community by providing equal opportunity to become effective, responsible and well adjusted citizens in a changing society.

Therefore, the school system will strive to:

  • provide a broad and flexible curriculum
  • create a positive learning atmosphere
