THE TOWN Once part of Portland, the town of Falmouth is now a thriving residential community stretching along scenic Casco Bay, which is said to contain 365 islands. Combining a blend of residential and commercial development, Falmouth offers a wide range of housing opportunities. Two new business developments are located in the town, one in the heart of the community and one located in West Falmouth at Exit 10 of the Maine Turnpike.
In 1658 Falmouth was named after a village of the same name in Cornwall, England. Settlement of the area began in the early 17th century. The town of Falmouth, Maine was incorporated on July 16th, 1718. Initially, Falmouth was an 80 square mile tract of land that consisted of the areas of present Cape Elizabeth, South Portland, Westbrook, Portland and Falmouth. This included all the islands along the coast from Richmond to Clapboard. By 1814 these towns had separated; Cape Elizabeth November 1, 1765, Portland July 4, 1786, Stroudwater (Westbrook) February 14, 1814 and other parts set off at different dates until March 25, 1853 when Falmouth became the size it is today.
